When emotional distress becomes an emergency

Take it seriously when someone: • talks about wanting to die or disappear • says others would be better without them • expresses unbearable hopelessness • searches for ways to harm themselves • gives away valued possessions unexpectedly • withdraws suddenly after intense distress • shows extreme mood changes • has recently attempted self-harm Ask directly and calmly: “Are you thinking about harming yourself or ending your life?” Asking this question does not plant the idea. It can open a path to support. When there is immediate danger: • do not leave the person alone • reduce access to dangerous means where this can be done safely • contact emergency services or reach the nearest emergency department • involve a trusted family member or responsible adult In India, Tele-MANAS provides 24×7 mental-health support at 14416 or 1800-89-14416. This is not attention-seeking. It is a situation requiring compassionate and immediate help.
