One bad night may leave anyone tired. But repeatedly sleeping poorly can affect: • mood • memory • concentration • decision-making • irritability • energy and motivation • the ability to manage stress Sleep difficulties can also occur alongside anxiety, depression, physical illness, substance use, medications or disrupted routines. Helpful foundations may include: • keeping a reasonably consistent sleep and wake time • reducing late-night screen exposure • limiting caffeine later in the day • avoiding alcohol as a sleep aid • keeping the sleeping space quiet and comfortable • discussing persistent sleep problems with a professional Sleep is not laziness. It is part of health. What most commonly disrupts your sleep—work, overthinking, screens, caregiving or something else? Persistent insomnia, severe daytime sleepiness or breathing interruptions during sleep should be medically evaluated.
