Stress commonly arises in response to an identifiable demand: A deadline. An examination. Financial pressure. A difficult relationship. A health concern. Anxiety may continue even when there is no immediate threat—or may feel much greater than the situation appears to require. It can involve: • excessive or difficult-to-control worry • restlessness or feeling constantly alert • muscle tension • difficulty concentrating • disturbed sleep • a racing heart, trembling or breathlessness • avoiding situations because of fear Occasional anxiety is part of life. But when worry becomes persistent, difficult to control or begins restricting everyday activities, it deserves attention.
