Many women are told: “Your periods will eventually become regular.” “Acne is normal.” “Just lose some weight.” “Facial hair runs in families.” But when several symptoms occur together, they may deserve a proper medical evaluation. Possible signs associated with PCOS can include: • irregular, delayed or absent periods • persistent acne • increased facial or body hair • thinning hair on the scalp • difficulty conceiving • unexplained weight changes • darkened or thickened skin around the neck, underarms or other folds • difficulty managing blood sugar Having one of these symptoms does not automatically mean that you have PCOS. Similarly, you do not need to experience every symptom to have PCOS. Diagnosis should be based on an appropriate medical history, examination and relevant investigations—not merely an ultrasound report or something seen on social media. PCOS management is also not identical for everyone. The right approach depends on the person’s symptoms, metabolic health, menstrual pattern, fertility plans and overall wellbeing. Which PCOS symptom took you the longest to recognise as something worth discussing with a healthcare professional? *This post is for general educatio
