How to support someone who says, “I’m not okay”

You do not need perfect words. Start by listening. Helpful responses can include: • “I’m glad you told me.” • “You don’t have to handle this alone.” • “Would you like me to listen, or help you consider the next step?” • “Can I stay with you while we contact someone?” Try to avoid: • “Others have it worse.” • “Just think positively.” • “You need to be stronger.” • “It is all in your head.” • immediately giving solutions without listening Do not promise secrecy when someone may be at risk of harming themselves. Support does not mean becoming their therapist. It can mean helping them connect with appropriate professional or emergency assistance.
