Emotional distress in men may sometimes appear as: • irritability or anger • becoming unusually quiet • overworking • withdrawing from family or friends • increased alcohol or substance use • reckless behaviour • disturbed sleep • physical complaints without a clear explanation • loss of interest or motivation • statements suggesting hopelessness or worthlessness “Be strong” should not mean “remain silent.” Strength can also mean: • naming what is happening • speaking with someone trusted • seeking professional support • accepting treatment • checking on a friend who has withdrawn Ask more than: “How is work?” Try: “How have you really been coping lately?” Men deserve spaces where emotional honesty is treated as responsibility—not weakness.
